My Approach

APRHA Registered Chinese Medicine practitioner, Dr. Bedelia Flanagan

As an educator at heart, my mission is to empower every individual who walks through my clinic doors to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their health through the lens of Chinese Medicine. At Sheoak Chinese Medicine, we exist to empower people to embrace their best health through acupuncture, cupping, and Chinese herbal medicine, so they can live their fullest lives with confidence and vitality.

My belief in this medicine is profoundly personal—it played a pivotal role in my recovery from an eating disorder during childhood and continues to support my family’s health and well-being today. This lived experience fuels my passion for extending the same care to your family, helping you achieve a healthier, more balanced version of yourself.

With years of clinical experience and extensive study, I integrate techniques from Chinese, Japanese, and Taiwanese traditions to create tailored treatments that address the unique needs of each individual. This personalized approach fosters meaningful and lasting health outcomes.

Areas of Expertise

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the insertion of thin needles along with specific points on the body. It is a minimally invasive method to activate nerve-rich areas on the body to influence tissues, glands, organs, and various organs and functions of the body. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, acupuncture stimulates the body to circulate Qi. Qi is the life-giving force in the body. When the Qi is circulating well, then there is harmony within the body, mind, and spirit.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is an important part of our approach at Sheoak Chinese Medicine. The combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine can provide powerful healing effects. I use a range of herbal formulas to treat a variety of health conditions that suit your individual needs.

Moxibusition

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese therapy that involves burning dried mugwort (moxa) near or on specific acupuncture points on the body. The heat generated from the burning moxa stimulates circulation and promote the smooth flow of Qi (vital energy) within the body's meridian pathways. This therapy can be applied directly to the skin or indirectly, using various techniques such as holding a burning moxa stick above the skin. Moxibustion is commonly used to alleviate pain, boost the immune system, leaving you feeling deeply relaxed and balanced.

Cupping

Cupping is a traditional therapy in Chinese Medicine where glass cups, are placed on the skin to create suction. This suction promotes increased blood flow to the area, which helps alleviate muscle tension, improve circulation, and stimulate the body's natural healing processes. The cups may be left in place for a few minutes or moved around the skin to target specific areas of concern.

Paediatric Chinese Medical Massage and Shonishin

While acupuncture is highly beneficial, it may not always be suitable for every child. Paediatric Chinese Medical Massage and Shonishin offers a highly effective alternative, encompassing a variety of techniques tailored to strengthen the child's body systems in a calming and gentle manner.
